When I look at apparel or costume design, I see all the ways clothing tells stories and it fascinates me.

I write about real people and the work they did or do; I am equally interested in fashion (and costumes designed for film and television) as I am in reviving the names of designers and tastemakers whose work was important to the world during their lifetimes, but who have been forgotten in the years or decades after.

I am especially interested in the lives and work of women, people of color, and individuals who identify as LGBTQ, and I remain dedicated to making certain that their contributions are documented and remembered.

I only write about work that impresses me, and that absolutely includes Ukrainian fashion designers (like Lilia Litkovska, Dariia Bila, Yana Matias, Elvira Gasanova, Maria Gavryliuk and Nataliia Kamenska); Maximalist Fashion Fairy Godmother, Caroline Vazzana; author and historian, Elizabeth L. Block; Revolve CMO Divya Mathur; and many other brilliant modistes.

I have written about Virginia Oldoini, the Countess of Castiglione (and I’ve remade a rather large number of her evening gowns); the mysterious death of Universal Pictures' original monster movie costume designer, Vera West; the brilliant Natacha Rambova, who introduced Art Deco to the United States; Rita Riggs, the uncredited costume designer of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960); 19th century dancer Cléo de Mérode; as well as many other stories about figures from history who deserve to be remembered an awful lot louder than they currently are.

I love the way clothing helps to tell stories and I’ve been privileged to speak with and write about more than 60 of the finest costume designers working in the 21st Century. My extensive backlist of costume design writing includes interviews with brilliant artists like Jenny Beavan, Marion Boyce, Ruth E. Carter, Daniel Orlandi, and Deborah L. Scott.

I always want to support excellence in fashion education and regularly cover stories about the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, its award-winning young designers, and its dedicated fashion museum which regularly produces groundbreaking exhibitions by brilliant curators like Dr. Elizabeth Way and Dr. Colleen Hill.
